“Jesus never measured His life by how or where He was of the greatest use. God places His saints where they will bring the most glory to Him, and we are totally incapable of judging where that may be.” – Oswald Chambers
“Christian contentment is the direct fruit of having no higher ambition than to belong to the Lord and to be entirely at His disposal.” – Allistair Begg
Is there anything more annoying than a backseat driver? Someone critiquing your every flick of the blinker signal or turn of the wheel. Commenting on your chosen route and asking why you insist on driving so fast or so slow. It’s enough to try the patience of a saint.
I realized recently that when it comes to submission I am God’s backseat driver. Technically, the Lord is in control of my life. I make a point of it every morning to consciously submit my life to His authority. I ask Him to sit in the driver’s seat and man the wheel and the gas pedal and the brakes. Then I spend the rest of the day leaning over his shoulder offering suggestions.
As Hannah Hurnard wrote in her classic, Hinds Feet on High Places, I am to be the Lord’s handmaiden named “Acceptance with Joy.” I am to sit in the passenger seat, close to the Lord, and enjoy, yes enjoy the ride no matter what the terrain. Jesus doesn’t need or want a backseat driver.
