The kids are back in school and, ready or not, the holidays will soon be upon us. Enthusiasts are already pulling out their fall decorations and craft boutiques have started in many areas. The excitement for all that Autumn and the holidays promise is contagious.
However, in spite of the beauty and endless joy this time of year provides, the hustle and bustle of activity, schedules, and responsibilities can cause physical and spiritual fatigue. Physical fatigue can often be relieved by a few days of rest or change of activity. But spiritual revitalization may require special treatment. For spiritual refreshing, the following practical suggestions may help: (Print these out and post in a prominent place to remind you that your relationship with the Lord is and always should be at the center of everything you do.)
• Spend some time in quiet meditation every day. We need to shut out the world around us, permitting ourselves to unwind and regain poise and composure. Making the effort to renew your peace of mind and heart results in new insights into God and His ways.
• Soak up God’s Word. Select a Bible portion that is a specific remedy for spiritual weariness. Psalm 1, 8, 19, 23, and 91 are excellent “tranquilizers”. Other helpful passages are Matthew 1 and 1 Corinthians 13. Read one or more of these reflectively.
• Engage in unhurried prayer. Forget your customary ways of prayer and just talk to God about whatever concerns you. Always begin and end your prayer with praising Him. Then, stop and listen for His response.
• Find a prayer partner. Share confidential needs and cares, and together pray them away. This is wonderful, no-cost therapy!
• Enjoy inspirational reading, in addition to the Bible (not instead of). Reading an uplifting book or magazine has spiritually recuperative value. Some families make a practice of going for an outing in a quiet spot with reading material.
• Stay in touch with Christian friends and groups. Those engaged in stressful personal service, need encouragement and a change of pace.
• Remain faithful to weekly worship services. When you honor God and are in fellowship with other believers, God will honor you.
