“So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him…”

universeWow! The God of the universe, Creator of all mankind, Giver and Sustainer of life spoke to Abram. That would have been unlike the other idols his father had known. Maybe he had looked at the statues his family carved from wood or stone with their own hands and wondered why they served these lords and masters who never talked to them. Maybe he cried out in the night with unanswered questions and God heard his confusion and was pleased that his restless heart was longing for some answers. Whatever went through the mind of this 75 year old man, when the living God spoke he responded in faith.

Hearing when combined with faith causes action and Abram’s act of obedience gave the living God a willing vessel that “all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”. (Genesis 12:3)

Blessings start with submission. Submission empowers obedience. In the 3rd article in this series, we unraveled the mystery that God called a nation “from the womb” to be His servant. This is how it happened. All it took was for one man to believe God and obey. Out of this humble beginning will come a nation who will bring forth the Savior of the world. He manifested the glory of God to a dark world. Stay with us as we continue telling His-story…

So, by way of application, take inventory and ask yourself if the living God wants you to be His vessel are you willing to turn everything over to Him? Would you be willing to submit to Him today? If you are not willing, would you at least ask Him to make you willing? To that end I have prayed for you.

“…and in you (Abram) all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3)

Abram is the beginning of the Hebrew nation. We answered our question (article #7) as to how one individual becomes a nation. It was birthed by a God who chose, a man who responded, and a God who keeps His promises.

gps-drive-250God’s purposes can come to pass, whether for individuals or nations, when we acknowledge Him as Supreme God of the universe and submit our will to His. Today we have His written word, made alive to us through His Spirit. That is the only GPS we need. I call it God’s Positioning System. The Bible will tell you where you are, who you are and lead you to a personal relationship with the living God. It reveals His identity.

Through these ten devotionals, I hope you have had yourself “a spiritual pedicure” and now understand that the one who has truly “lovely feet”, is the one who brings good news of salvation through Israel’s God, for there is no other way under heaven in which to be saved. (Isaiah 45:20-25) Ask Him to give you Abram’s faith to believe in a God you cannot see, but who sees you. His message of peace can reconcile an individual sinner or a straying nation back to Himself. How does He do that?

“…our griefs He Himself bore…smitten of God and afflicted…He was pierced through for our transgressions…by His scourging we are healed…But the LORD was pleased to crush Him…if He would render Himself as a guilt offering…My Servant, will justify the man and He will bear their iniquities…He poured out Himself to death…yet He Himself bore the sin of many…and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, who is called the God of all the earth.” (excerpts from Isaiah 52, 53 and 54)

Won’t you be blessed by receiving God’s Servant, Jesus?

ABRAHAM’S SEED

Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation, “believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness”. Anyone who responds to God as Abraham did, in belief and obedience, will also be called the sons (and daughters) of Abraham. This is how the prophecy God made to Abram about being “a blessing to all the families of the earth” (Genesis 12:3), was fulfilled. God Himself revealed that He would justify the nations (Gentiles) by faith. Faith was the method  by which father Abraham came into right standing with God (justified). (Galatians 3:6-9)

christ_on_the_crossJesus Christ, the Anointed One, became the core of this prophecy when He hung on a tree, shed His blood for the sins of the world, and became the sacrificial Lamb of God that takes away the sin of all mankind. (Galatians 3:14). He was put to death on our behalf because the price tag of sin is death. He was buried and on the third day rose from the dead. This then is the good news, that through believing (faith) and receiving (response) we are saved.(1 Corinthians 15:1-4) The wonderful conclusion, or actual beginning of a new life in the Anointed One, comes in belonging to Christ or being found in Him. Only then are we of Abraham’s spiritual seed and an heir to his inheritance according to the promise of God (Galatians 3:29) “Very truly I tell you; whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” – Christ  (John 5:24) May we welcome you to the family of God?

“Lovely Feet”
footmassageLovely feet belong to him who says to Zion, “Your God reigns”. (Isaiah 52:7). Why does God care about the feet of His messengers? In short, it is because if the bearer of news doesn’t tell the whole truth, then he can be discredited. Jesus was sent by His Father to come into the world as the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords. This is why He was born as human flesh and blood so that he could testify to this truth and He added, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” (John 18:37)

In Him (Christ Jesus), you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation – having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise…to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Jesus was born of Jewish heritage, yet conceived by the Holy Spirit so He did not inherit the fall of mankind’s sin. Other nations (Gentiles), therefore must realize that God’s grace was to bring salvation to the world through the Holy One of Israel. God is not finished with the physical nation, Israel, even though today His Spirit works through the bride of Jesus Christ, His Church of whom He is the head. However, there is a day of restoration coming (Acts 3:21). If I do not tell you the whole truth, that it is Israel’s God who reigns, then I would not be a trusted messenger. Next in the series we will talk about Israel’s restoration of faith in the one true and living God who said “I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” – Jesus. THE PLIGHT OF ALL GENTILES
Gentiles in the flesh (outside of a relationship with Jesus Christ) are …dead in your trespasses and sins (against God and man) and therefore children of wrath (Ephesians 2:1-3) …separated from Christ (the Messiah) ….excluded from the commonwealth of Israel ….no promises ….no hope …without God …in the world (strangers, aliens, separated) (Ephesians 2:1, 11)

olive_branchHowever, according to God’s eternal purpose and mercy, carried out through Christ Jesus when we respond in faith to Him. we receive the gift of salvation and become fellow citizens of God’s household. The metaphor of grafting in a wild olive branch (Gentile nations) into a natural olive tree (Israel) is used in Romans 11.

There is no wall of hostility between Jew and Gentile in this house. God took both groups and made them one. The enmity between those far away (Gentiles) and those near (Jews) died  and peace was established (Ephesians 2:12-22).

For this reason our Father in heaven is worthy of all our praise (Ephesians 3:14-21) Be strengthened today in His Spirit.

THE PLIGHT OF THE JEWS
“Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD will not take into account.” The question is then asked, “Is this blessing then upon the circumcised (Jew); or upon the uncircumcised (Gentile) also? For we (Jews) say, “Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it reckoned? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised?”

abrahamGood questions. And the answer is that Abraham was circumcised following his declaration of faith. It was “a seal” of his faith. We do not need to “do” anything first in order to be justified before God (forgiven of sin). He asks that when we hear the message, we recognize and repent of our wretched, helpless state apart from Him, ask to be saved by His free gift of grace (faith) in believing He is who He says He is, our merciful. loving Savior.

Abraham was rightly called “the father of all who believe without being circumcised…”. “For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of Faith.”  (Romans 4:8-13; Galatians 3:18; 29). Jews are saved in the same manner as Gentiles, by faith.

Abraham was circumcised following his declaration of faith, so that we could clearly see that it is not the “work” of anyone that saves them, but faith. I liken that today to the believer following the Lord’s command to be baptized. Baptism does not save us; it is the outward declaration of faith in Jesus (Yeshua) who released us from our sin by His death on the cross. (Revelation 1:5)

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, thank You for being the Savior of all mankind. The ground is level at the cross of Jesus. Open my eyes that my faith in Your work on the cross  might be credited to my account as righteousness. Thank You. Amen.
