ISRAEL IS… a land of which Jehovah said, “is Mine.” Lev. 25:23

arkAfter the flood, Noah and his three sons and their wives left the ark, along with every living thing that was with them. These eight people had a Divine mandate to “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” (Genesis 9:1) They were to “swarm” the earth – to cover it”.

They spoke only one language then and had only one set of words. These were the beginning of the nations. They are called Gentiles or simply “nations” in the Scripture. That differentiates them from God’s chosen people, the Jews which comes later.

In Genesis 11:1-9 we see that these offspring of Noah first settled in the land of Shinar or what we know as Babylon in modern day Iraq. There they decided to “build a city and a tower and to make a name for themselves.” Hmmm. Doesn’t take humans long to do their own thing, does it now? Jehovah had told them to “fill the earth…swarm…cover”. But they had a different idea and somehow we always think our plans are better than Jehovah’s and we are quick to turn against Him in disobedience. Have you ever wanted to make a name for yourself instead of heading out under God’s direction and letting Him make a name for Himself through your obedience?

This incident in Scripture is known as the tower of Babel and the building of a system opposed to God. Humanistic reasoning is such a thing. It is a picture of contrast: man vs. God. As someone has said in similar terms, “God made man in his image and ever since then man has been trying to make God in his image.”

“LORD, how often in my life have I thought I had a better way of doing things? My education, my prestige, my abilities, even my name, should gain someone’s approval. I wanted so badly to make something of myself. Now I see that this was wrong. I have sinned; I am sorry. Please forgive me, for I realize all these blessings are from You so that I could be a vessel for Your name to become known and not mine. Change my heart, 0 Lord, so that I willingly obey You and in so doing, bring You glory, Amen.”
